Special situations
- Publication can expose your name, location, and case details. If disclosure could put you in danger, ask the court about sealing or waiver procedures and get legal help before filing.

Does this include the petition I file with the court?
No, and that is deliberate. Courts require their own current forms, which differ by state and often by county, and a form downloaded from anywhere else is routinely rejected. This package prepares everything you bring to those forms — eligibility, history, your reason statement, publication, and a filing checklist — and tells you to get the mandatory forms from your court.
Do I have to publish my name change in a newspaper?
It depends on where you file. Many states require publication, some require it only in certain circumstances, and some do not require it at all. The publication worksheet walks you through determining whether it applies to you, and treats it as a safety question as well as a procedural one.
What if publishing my name would put me at risk?
Tell the court before you file. Many courts have procedures to seal a file or waive publication where publication would create danger, for example in cases involving domestic violence or stalking. This is a situation where getting legal help is worth it.
How long does the whole process take?
It varies widely by court, and by whether publication is required. The filing checklist is built around your court's stated timelines rather than a national average, because a number quoted here would be wrong for most people reading it.
Who do I have to notify after the order is granted?
Social Security, your state motor-vehicle agency, passport services, banks, employers, insurers, schools, and the tax authority, among others. The notification kit gives you a tracked list and letter templates, and each organisation applies its own current requirements.
Can I use this for my child?
No. A minor's name change follows different rules and normally requires notice to both parents, and sometimes a guardian ad litem. This package is for adults changing their own name.
