- The hull, outboard motor, and trailer are frequently titled separately, each with its own number and its own transfer. Buyers routinely discover this after paying.
- A vessel may be state-titled or federally documented with the Coast Guard, and the two transfer through entirely different processes.
- A maritime lien on a documented vessel may not appear in state records at all, which is a reason to check documentation directly.
- Verify the Hull Identification Number on the transom against the title in person. A mismatch stops the transfer and can indicate something seriously wrong.
- Where the sale depends on a survey, say what happens to the deposit if the survey finds a problem — otherwise that becomes the dispute.
Frequently asked questions
Does the trailer transfer with the boat?
Not automatically. In most states a trailer is a separately titled vehicle with its own VIN and its own transfer. This agreement records it specifically because buyers frequently pay for a package and then find they cannot register the trailer.
What is the difference between a state title and Coast Guard documentation?
A state title works like a car title and transfers through the state agency. A federally documented vessel has a Certificate of Documentation instead, requires its own bill of sale and federal filing, and can carry maritime liens that do not appear in state records. Establish which you have before agreeing terms.
Do I need a survey?
For anything of significant value, it is worth it, and insurers and lenders often require one. A survey finds what a walkthrough cannot — moisture in the hull, engine condition, structural issues. If the sale depends on it, agree in advance what happens to the deposit if it comes back badly.
The motor is a different brand from the boat. Does that matter?
It matters for the paperwork. An outboard usually has its own serial number and may have its own title or lien, separate from the hull. Record it specifically so the buyer can prove ownership of it later.
Where do I find the Hull Identification Number?
Usually on the starboard side of the transom, twelve characters. Check it against the title in person before paying — a mismatch between the hull and the paperwork stops the transfer and is worth understanding before money moves.
